Salute to Workers on Labor Day
Labor Day in the United States is a federal holiday which celebrates the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of this great country. People of course enjoy all the sales and spend time with family and friends. It is the unofficial end of the summer.
This year in particular I am especially thankful for Labor Day and salute all “workers”, on this day of rest. The country just witnessed the worst devastation done by a hurricane, Hurricane Harvey, here in Texas but through all the devastation came the strength and the grit of the American people. Neighbors helping neighbors, strangers rescuing people in boats, and on their backs filled television screens everywhere. It was simply amazing and awe-inspiring to watch. It didn’t matter where one came from or what family one belonged to, everyone was willing to lend a hand.
When it came time for donations, it seemed like people could not give enough. Our office sent out a message one night to the employees and I had goose bumps when I saw the generosity of the staff. Various celebrities donated their personal money to help with the hurricane victims. Several individuals raised money on social media and the different television channels raised millions of dollars for disaster victims. People volunteered their time to help in the various shelters. Church groups sang and worshipped with the hurricane victims to raise their spirits and give them hope. There were groups of people rescuing animals and firefighters from different parts of the country all came down to Texas to help out.
Sad as it may seem, this unthinkable tragedy brought the country together. We remembered who we are as ordinary people and we cherished the love, strength and selflessness whigh has always held as together as one people.
As we celebrate this Labor Day and many more to come, I pray we remember first and foremost our similarities and goals and the fortitude and toughness that binds as together as one people. Let’s lay aside all our differences and remember the contributions made by everyone towards building this country into the great country it is today. Today we rest from our labor. We gain strength to rise up tomorrow as one people with one goal, to love each other and encourage each other in our various roles in this wonderful country.
